This role is based in an outdoor/alternative education setting.

Ad Astra are recruiting for Mentors to join our team. This role will involve you supporting young people in small groups alongside one of our specialist mentors, and supervising small groups during rest breaks.

No experience is required as full training will be provided, however relevant experience working with children or young people in a similar educational setting would be desirable.

This role is to support vulnerable young learners who are no longer in mainstream education (school based setting). The role will involve some time working outdoors and helping students to engage with a wide range of activities including construction, mechanics, practical conservation, ICT, Maths and English. The successful Mentor will be able to build relationships quickly and have a non-judgemental mindset and be able to participate in all activities. This role involves significant physical activity and time outdoors.

To be considered for this position you must have an interest in learning more about working with young people who may have SEMH (social, emotional and mental health issues) ASD (autistic spectrum disorder) or ADD (Attention deficit disorder). This role can be challenging, however it is very rewarding for the right person who wants to make a difference in young people’s lives.

Essential Requirements:

  • Be available 3 days a week from 9am – 3pm during school term time

  • Enhanced DBS certificate, or registered on the online update service

  • Be able to adapt to challenging situations that can arise

  • Have a full clean driving licence and use of a car

  • Have a genuine desire to become part of our committed team

  • Be patient, caring and understanding

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience of working in a similar setting

  • Experience of working with children or young adults

All staff we register will undertake thorough interviewing and referencing checks and hold, or be prepared to undergo, an Enhanced DBS check that must be registered on the Update Service.
